GIRL PAIN examines the nuanced connections between pain, femininity, spirituality, disability, pain management, and assistive devices. The mixed media work utilizes paint, ink, ceramics, etching, thread, found object, and ready-made object to construct a reflection of the Mira Mariah's identity and experience with the emotional and physical pain that accompanies disability and motherhood. Mariah aesthetically conjures a self-mythology, deconstructing and connecting dominant definitions of pain vs. pain management. The exhibition is an inward exploration, infusing beauty and holiness into the process of pain mitigation. The use of catholic imagery and symbolism within the body of work is drawn from the Mariah's meditation of spiritual pain– nurturing unique mythology as navigation through the pain and beauty of womanhood.
